HARRISBURG — House State Government Committee Chairman Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) issued the following statement today, offering his full support for the patriotic Mars Area High School students, faculty and the school board who are now coming under racially charged criticism for participating in an USA-theme night celebration during Friday’s varsity football game against Penn Hills:
“Proudly wearing red, white and blue, cheering U.S.A, U.S.A. in unison, waving American flags and displaying other signs in support of our nation and President Donald Trump is as All-American as the game of high school football itself and should not be questioned by anyone.
“It is outright ridiculous and absolutely un-American for Penn Hills administrators, parents or anyone else to call for disciplinary action against these patriotic students for exercising their Constitutional right to express their love of country and gratitude for the blessings of living in the freest Republic in the history of mankind.
“This type of student expression needs to be encouraged and applauded, rather than maliciously mislabeled as racism due to a few blatantly ignorant Tweets from the intolerant left.
“In fact, it is those in the mainstream media who quote Twitter trolls to generate internet clickbait who actually warrant criticism and should be boycotted for turning a traditional display of patriotism and school spirit into a sensationalist fake news narrative.
“I unapologetically stand with Mars Area School District and all of my patriotic neighbors in defense of our individual liberties and freedoms!”
