Metcalfe Says Court Ruling Exposes Governor as ‘Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’ in Battle for Government Transparency
HARRISBURG — House State Government Committee Majority Chairman, Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler), issued the following statement regarding today’s Commonwealth Court decision to overrule Gov. Tom Wolf’s unlawful firing of Pennsylvania Office Open Records Executive Director Erik Arneson.

“Today’s Commonwealth Court decision is not only a major victory for our Constitutional system of checks and balances, but exposes the governor as a blatantly partisan wolf in sheep’s clothing when it comes to delivering on his countless pledges to make Pennsylvania state government more open, accountable and transparent to the people. The actions taken by the governor in the first few days after taking his oath to defend the Constitution, prove that he is in fact not a champion of government transparency, but a disingenuous obstructionist.

“The Office of Open Records was created to be completely independent from the influence of the executive branch and all other elected state officials. Today’s court ruling which allows Erik Arneson to resume his six-year term as the independent executive director should serve as a lesson to Governor Wolf on the true nature of government transparency and that each and every action taken by the executive branch is ultimately accountable to the people of Pennsylvania.”

The House State Government Committee maintains legislative jurisdiction over a broad range of issues and convenes hearings regularly to consider bills dealing with all aspects of state government, including: Pennsylvania’s Open Records Law; proposed amendments to the Pennsylvania Constitution, the Public Official and Employee Ethics Act; election code reform and pension reform.
